Public Outreach and Teaching

Teaching School- and University-Level Mathematics

Starting 2001, I have repeatedly been working as a tutor, teaching assistent or unversity lecturer for students of computer sciences and physics (first to third semester; Analysis T1, Analysis T2, Funktionentheorie, Mathematische Methoden, Differenzial- und Integralrechnung, Lineare Algebra). This work included giving tutorials, recitations and last-minute crash-courses, standing in for single lectures, setting and grading tests. Notes and problem/challenge sheets for the academic year 2010/11 (in German) are available here.

I have also been teaching parts of an A-level mathematics course for Future 2000. In addition to this work I have published supplementary lecture notes, which are still available at the HTUShop Graz, but can be considered as mostly superseeded by my contributions to the book Mathematik described below.

Mathematik - a Textbook for Bachelor-Level Mathematics Education

This textbook, with supplementary material located at www.matheweb.de, has been published by Spektrum-Springer in 2008, the Year of Mathematics. On 1512 pages, we, a team of six authors, did our best to give comprehensible explanations, provide many real-life examples, and at the same time give our readers the opportunity not only to learn how to perform calculations, but also to understand what mathematics is really about. I had the opportunity to contribute to several chapters in part I (foundations), II (one-dimensional analysis), IV (higher-dimensional analysis) and V (advanced analysis). While we are convinced that we have done a pretty good job, we welcome any suggestions how the book could be improved even further.

Quanten, Felder, Schwarze Löcher - the Lecture Series

One of the main duties of science is to make its results available (in appropriate form) to the wide public. In this spirit, the Basisgruppe Physik started in 2005 a lecture series called Quanten, Felder, Schwarze Löcher, where students, lecturers and professors both of the Graz University of Technology and the University of Graz gave talks on hot topics of modern physics, accessible to the interested general audience. I had the honour to be key organizer of this series during the first two years; by now I have passed on this responsibility to younger collegues.

Quanten, Felder, Schwarze Löcher - the Book

The lecture series mentioned above will have an additional "spin-off". At the moment the organizing team and several key speakers are working on a book, which will presumably be called Quanten, Felder, Schwarze Löcher - ein Streifzug durch die moderne Physik. This book will be published by the Verlag der Technischen Universität Graz and contain popular articles on such fascinating and diverse topics as Special Relativity, Quantum Computing, Black Holes, Hawking Radiation or... Nothing.
