New Professor in Theoretical Physics

Since August 1st, Thomas Weiss works as Full Professor in the field of Theoretical Nanophysics at the University of Graz.

The group of Thomas Weiss explores light-matter interaction at the nanoscale by theoretical and computational means. The aim is to enhance and to control this interaction by resonant phenomena using metallic and dielectric resonators as well as open cavities and waveguides. While the involved resonances are rather versatile with respect to their tuning capabilities, a profound theoretical description is rather challenging due to the radiative character of the resonant field distributions. The group of Thomas Weiss develops theorical frameworks for the light-matter interaction with these radiative modes and investigates resulting novel phenomena and their potential for applications.

CV: Thomas Weiss studied Physics at the University of Stuttgart between 2003 and 2008. Afterwards, he went to Clermont-Ferrand in France to work on his Ph.D. project, which was co-supervised by Prof. Gérard Granet and Prof. Nikolay Gippius in Clermont-Ferrand and Prof. Harald Giessen in Stuttgart. He graduated in 2011 and joined the group of Prof. Philip Russell at the Max-Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen. In 2013, he became Junior Professor at the University of Stuttgart. Since August 2021, he is now Full Professor at the University of Graz.
