Wenn ein Stern vor 7000 Jahren explodiert: Astrophysiker Hanslmeier dokumentierte seltenen Nova-Ausbruch

Es tut sich in diesen Tagen einiges am nächtlichen Himmel. Die Perseiden, ein Strom von Meteoren, sorgt alljährlich Mitte August für ein Sternschnuppen-Spektakel. Doch nicht nur das: Arnold Hanslmeier, Astrophysiker an der Universität Graz, konnte am 9. August 2021 einen besonders heftigen Nova-Ausbruch eines Sterns fotografisch festhalten.
„Der Stern, der normalerweise nur mit Teleskopen zu erkennen ist, wurde plötzlich so hell, dass er als schwaches Sternchen mit bloßem Auge im Sternbild Schlangenträger, Ophiuchus, zu sehen war“, schildert der Wissenschafter.
„RS Oph ist ein symbolischer Doppelstern. Dabei strömt Materie von einem sogenannten roten Riesen zu einem weißen Zwerg. Alle paar Jahrzehnte kommt es dann zu einer riesigen Explosion. Die Kernfusion von Wasserstoff zu Helium zündet, der Stern wird um mehr als das Hundertfache heller.“
Gefahr für die Erde droht dabei nicht, beruhigt Hanslmeier: „Der Stern ist etwa 7000  Lichtjahre von uns entfernt. Das heißt, der Ausbruch fand schon vor 7000 Jahren statt.“
