Andreas Windischbacher completed his PhD at the Institute of Physics, University of Graz. In his dissertation, he developed and applied ab initio quantum-mechanical methods to study the interaction of light with complex, novel materials. His research focused on the formation and ultrafast dynamics of excitons, bound electron-hole pairs that are crucial for understanding light-matter interactions. The results of his work provide valuable insights that could help optimize materials for more efficient and cost-effective solar cells.
For his exceptional academic and scholarly achievements, Andreas Windischbacher was honoured with the Promotio sub auspiciis Praesidentis rei publicae, an award reserved for only the very best graduates of Austrian universities. The golden ring was presented by Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen on March 17th, 2025, at the Vienna Hofburg.
Since the Josef Krainer Förderungspreis award fell on the same day, Andreas Windischbacher was able to attend the ceremony only at the second occasion. On November 12th, 2025, he received the prize from Manuela Khom, Deputy Governor of Styria.
The Institute of Physics warmly congratulates Dr. Windischbacher on these two exceptional honours and wishes him continued success in his scientific career.
