UniGraz@Museum - Magdeburg Hemispheres

In the mid 17th century Otto von Guericke demonstrated with the help of the Magdeburg hemispheres of about 40 cm in diameter the existance of vacuum in an impressive way. By applying one's own body weight (using a rope and a guide pulley) this model shows the immence force by which the evacuated hemispheres of about 25 cm in diameter are pressed together by the atmospheric pressure.
