38. Soccer Tournament for Employees of Styrian Universities - image: Uni Graz / Windischbacher

The 38th indoor soccer tournament for employees of Styrian Universities took place with the participation of physicists. We are looking for reinforcements for our soccer team.

For the first time, a team of sport enthusiasts from our institute has participated in the annual indoor soccer tournament for employees. Against all odds, our team finished in 6th place, actually being the 3rd best team out of 7 from our university! The victory was secured by the "Virtual Vehicle" group from the Technical University.

Nonetheless, we are proud to be better placed than experienced teams of sports scientists, jurists, biologists and the research management, showing that also "nerds" are skilled on the pitch. Most importantly, we have grown even closer together as a team representing the Institute of Physics.

The 2025 Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award of the Solar-Terrestrial Sciences Division of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) has been awarded to Karin Dissauer for her outstanding research in solar and extra-solar space weather research. The award was presented at the EGU General Assembly that took place in Vienna from 2025 April 27 to May 2 and that gathered more than 20,000 scientists from 120 countries. Decoding Molecular Orbitals

A recent study published in Physical Review B by researchers from the “Orbital Cinema” team from the Physics Institute at the University of Grazand the Forschungszentrum Jülich presents a remarkable breakthrough in molecular electronics. The team, led by Peter Puschnig and Stefan Tautz, successfully mapped the electronic structure of bisanthene—a molecule that can be considered a nano-graphene flake—on a metal surface. Using a technique called photoemission orbital tomography, developed at the Institute of Physics, they deciphered the electron distribution in an unprecedented 38 (!) molecular orbitals.
