AG Oberflächenphysik erhält neue Leitung

Prof. Martin Sterrer übernimmt die Nachfolge von Prof. Falko Netzer

Die AG Oberflächen- und Grenzflächenphysik wurde von Prof. Netzer zu einer der erfolgreichsten Forschergruppen der Karl Franzens Universität aufgebaut, was durch den an Prof. Netzer verliehenen ERC Advanced Grant seine internationale Anerkennung fand. Mit Herrn Univ.-Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr. techn. Sterrer konnte zur Nachfolge ein weiterer ERC Preisträger berufen werden um neue Forschungsthemen erfolgreich zu erschließen.

Herr Prof. Martin Sterrer wurde in Ried im Innkreis, OÖ, geboren. Nach der Schulausbildung (Matura an der HTBLA Wels) und abgeleistetem Wehrdienst hat er an der TU Wien Technische Chemie studiert und dort am Institut für Physikalische und Theoretische Chemie (später Institut für Materialchemie) unter der Leitung von Prof. Erich Knözinger an seiner Diplom- und Doktorarbeit zu photochemischen und photophysikalischen Oberflächen-prozessen auf Oxid-Nanopartikeln gearbeitet. Mit einem Erwin-Schrödinger-Stipendium des FWF ist er 2003 als PostDoc  nach Berlin in die Abteilung Chemische Physik (Prof. Hajo Freund) des Fritz-Haber-Instituts (FHI) der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft gekommen, wo er sich mit der Charakterisierung von Punktdefekten und einzelnen Metal-Atomen auf einkristallinen Oxid-oberflächen beschäftigt hat. Nach einem weiteren PostDoc-Aufenthalt am FOM-Institut für Atom- und Molekülphysik in Amsterdam (Prof. Mischa Bonn) ist er wieder nach Berlin zurückgekehrt und hatte von 2007 bis 2014 die Leitung der Arbeitsgruppe „Katalyse und Laser-Spektroskopie“ in der Abteilung Chemische Physik am FHI inne. Im Jahr 2013 wurde er an der TU Berlin im Fach Physikalische Chemie habilitiert.

Prof. Sterrer beschäftigte sich zuletzt mit der Herstellung von Modell-Katalysatoren und deren Charakterisierung unter Verwendung eines breiten Spektrums von mikroskopischen und spektroskopischen Methoden der Oberflächenphysik. Die Zuerkennung eines ERC-Grants ermöglicht ihm seit drei Jahren an der Etablierung eines weiteren Forschungsthemas, der Untersuchung von Struktur, Elektronentransferreaktionen und Energie-transferprozessen an wohldefinierten Oxid-Wasser-Grenzflächen, zu arbeiten.
