Klimaforscher Gottfried Kirchengast erhielt das Ehrenzeichen des Landes Steiermark

Gottfried Kirchengast, international renommierter Klimaforscher an der Universität Graz, leistet in seinem Fachbereich Pionierarbeit. Der Geophysiker und sein Team sind die führende Forschungsgruppe auf dem Gebiet der satellitengestützten Okkultationstechnik zur globalen Klimabeobachtung.

Am 15. Juni 2023 wurde Gottfried Kirchengast von Landeshauptmann Christopher Drexler in der Aula der Alten Universität das Ehrenzeichen des Landes Steiermark für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kunst verliehen. Der Universitätsprofessor für Geophysik leitet die von ihm ins Leben gerufene Forschungsgruppe für Atmosphären-Fernerkundung und Klimasystem am Wegener Center der Universität Graz und ist Sprecher des Profilbereichs „Climate Change Graz“. Außerdem gründete er das weltweit einzigartige regionale Klimastationsnetz „WegenerNet“ im Raum Feldbach in der Südoststeiermark.
